Juneathon 2011 Day 18

Goodnight Crocket...

Sadly this week my Juneathon mission came to an end, no blog on Thursday and no exercise or blog on Friday. I was determined to push through and keep up with exercising and blogging every day. Sometimes life has a funny way of messing up your best laid plans.

My Uncle Dave (Crocket) has been very unwell for around 6 months now and on Thursday night he took a very big turn for the worse and at around 20:00 on Friday evening he passed away in his sleep, he was only 46 years old.

My Brother and I had already arranged to attend the gym today and despite the situation with our uncle, we both decided to make sure we went.

So today I hit the gym for a great bit of cardio. Although I slept well last night I woke up this morning and felt completely drained and thought I would get a boost from a bit of cardio, while I was working out it was all good.

I started with a set time 15 minute run and managed to get in 2.5km which given my lethargic state I was most impressed this was followed by my favourite kettlebell workout, as I found the 12kg too easy last time around I decided to start my move up to the next weight 16kg the p, oh my days that was a big big difference the plan was to do 1 of the 6 sets with the 16kg, I ended up challenging myself and my body by doing the first 2 sets.

Swings - 1 minute
Snatch - Press - 30 secs each arm
Single Arm Swings - 30 secs each arm
Snatch - Squat - Press - 30 secs each side
Alternating Swings - 1 minute
X 2 16kg kettlebell

Swings - 1 minute
Snatch - Press - 30 secs each arm
Single Arm Swings - 30 secs each arm
Snatch - Squat - Press - 30 secs each side
Alternating Swings - 1 minute
X 4 12kg kettlebell

Juneathon 2011 Day 15

Ouch...

Yesterday my Wife was home from her mini-break and a little bit of normality resumed sadly including going back to work.
On a positive work note I applied for a new role within my organisation and have been waiting for date for my 1st interview/assessment day, I opened my emails at work and there was the great news, 30th June is my date which is good as I could start training in August if I'm sucessful, the bad news for this is as well as keeping up the fitness stuff I now have to study and prepare for this assessment, I had no idea just how much simple maths I had forgotten since leaving School 18 years ago! It's going to be a lot of hard work, but if I'm successful it will be so worth it.

As I wanted to spend some time with my Wife yesterday I had to do my minimum 1 mile run after work, I chose to do a 1 mile stretch of the VLM route backwards up to where I leave my car during the day, the downside to this is it is predomanently up hill! I have to say it was definitely a struggle, stats are on yesterdays very short blog.

Sort of back to normal today in the gym for just after 6am and on the treadmill, managed to bang out 4.27km in 30 minutes, the furthest I have run since the Silverstone Half Marathon in March, so I was quite pleased with my efforts, this was followed by a 40 minute Spinning class, today's profile was "race day" which meant no recovery periods and lots of sustained high resistance sections mixed with flat road running and sprints, I have to say this was hard work today. Still I enjoyed it.

The weight is still coming off too which is pleasing, the actual total is around 8kg as I put in an incorrect starting weight, should have been 106kg to start not 103kg.

Off to work shortly so hopefully no more exercise until tomorrow.

Juneathon 2011 Day 13

Nice new shoes :)

Anyone who is a Mother or Father will understand and appreciate the joys of teething, my youngest son is 18 months old and has most of his teeth, he has 4 more to come and typically they have picked this weekend to try showing up, my Wife is on holiday and out of the country so I'm having to deal with it all by myself this has meant roughly 10 hours sleep in total across Saturday and Sunday night. Despite this both children and I have been pretty awake and lively, that was until this afternoon, the youngest became very moody and I kept falling asleep while playing with him, which is always the sign of great parenting.

On a big positive side I had a package arrive today containing my shiny new Asics Gel-Nimbus 12 trainers.
The orange in them is a lot brighter than I thought it would be, but I love them, did my first run in them tonight and they're amazingly comfy, I ran the London Marathon in a pair of Asics but then won a pair of Adidas which were nice but not as comfy, I don't think I'll be straying from Asics again.

Tonight's run was quite enjoyable and I probably could have carried on for longer but didn't think it would be fair on the child care, done a new pb for the mile taking another 20 seconds off my previous pb for this year, hopefully this means I'm getting a bit better at this running stuff again.

Juneathon 2011 Day 12

Lazy day.

Not much to write today, not that what I normally write is all that interesting anyway.
Had a lazy day of sofa hugging, but managed to do an impromptu and unplanned run while at a children's birthday party (things you had no idea people have in their garage) I also came in 4th in a group of 7 Dads.

No Garmin with me so no exciting and interesting HR stats for you today. Back to normal tomorrow evening for day 13 as I have a planned run in the rain.

Bye for now

Juneathon 2011 Day 11

Busy day....

I would like to start today's blog by congratulating my very good friends Tammy & Steve on becoming Mr & Mrs Long today.

Bearing the above in mind and the fact that my Wife is still on holiday I had to leave the kids with my Mother-in-law and hit the gym.

Today I was planning to do my first attempt at a proper (ish) brick session, so I jumped on the "Espinner" put all the info in and set it up on "race day" setting for 45 minutes, a couple of hills and sprints here and there, very few flat roads. I managed to do 14.1 miles. I had my trainers all set up and ready to go near the bike so managed to get my SPD shoes off and clean the bike while putting the trainers on and doing up the laces, before jogging over to the treadmill farthest away from me and starting the run, oh my days! I had no idea how hard this would be, thankfully I have found out now so I can work on it, I managed to plod along for 11 minutes and get a whole 1 mile done. So tired when I was finished that I thought I would fall asleep on the stretching mat area.

Tomorrow will be a nice easy simple 1 mile run.

Night night.

Juneathon 2011 Day 10

A nice surprise.

My Wife is on a girly holiday now, so I had to get my exercise for the day done before she was due to leave for the airport and as a result I had to cancel the usual Friday Spinning class, so instead I headed to the gym for the usual 6am start to a Friday hoping to add to the amount of cardio I have put in so far this week. I pulled into the car park to be greeted by my little Brother/PT a sight that in nearly 5 years of attending this gym at it's old and new location I have never seen at that time of day, big positive though as I would now have my part time PT standing next to me, this always helps motivate me to work a little harder than normal.

Today's Juneathon.

Run 1 mile, 10:52, Av HR 149 (81%), Max HR 172 (93%).

Kettlebell Cardio, 41:39, Av HR 148 (80%), Max HR 163 (88%)
Swings 1 minute,
Snatch - Press 30 Seconds each arm,
Single Arm Swings 30 Seconds each arm,
Snatch - Squat - Press 30 Seconds each side,
Alternating Swings 1 minute.
12kg Kettlebell 6 times with 1-2 minute break between each set.

Goodnight all,

Juneathon 2011 Day 9

Early start early finish?

Not much to write today really, early shift at work so  was up at 4am and at work by 6am, had a pretty dull day at work mainly revising for a promotion interview I have coming up soon. Finished work at 3pm and rushed home to see my youngest son awake for the first time in 3 days which was nice, but sadly I think he may have forgotten me as he didn't really seem to happy to see me :( so I took my oldest son to his dance class and while he was in there I went for a quick (slow) run (ha ha, a man who multi-tasks).

Today's run, well I say run, was a lot harder than it has been since starting Juneathon, I guess I must be a tiny bit tired from waking at stupid o'clock, so I managed just over 2k in 14 minutes, I haven't had a chance to upload my Garmin data so no dull HR stats for you all today.

I do however have a choon of the day:

I absolutely love this song and this band.

Juneathon 2011 Day 8

Tired, so very tired, but I will push through.

This mornings Juneathon was incredibly difficult, woke up feeling as if I only went to sleep 10 minutes earlier! Got some breakfast down my neck and headed out to Leisurezone, on today's agenda a kind of brick session starting with a run and then moving into the Spinning studio for the cycle part of the brick.

I started off with a gentle run planning to just run for 20 minutes non-stop and upping the pace as needed, I ended up 1.67 miles, not too special but I was happy with that, after straight into the Spinning studio and cycling 15 miles, good morning all round although also very tiring and all this before heading to work for the day.

Juneathon 2011 Day 7

Back to work :(

If there's one thing that can always get in the way of exercise it's work, I've had a great 9 day period of not working but fell straight back to reality today with the worst shift of my pattern, 11-7! I really do hate this shift, I have to leave home at around 9am and if I'm lucky I get back home around 7:30, today was OK as we were let out early and I got home at 7:20 which allowed me to jump out for a quick run with the Wife. I even managed a 2011 pb for the mile.

Run - 1 mile - 10:43 - Av HR 160bpm (86%) - Max HR 178bpm (96%) - 173 calories burned.

Oh and I dropped below 100kg today too, so I'm very very happy :)

Juneathon 2011 Day 6 - Run - Kettle - Run why?

Run - Kettle - Run why?

I wanted to get in a cheeky Kettlebell work out today and as my Wife was finishing work at 3 I happily picked up my oldest son from School and then handed both of them over to her and headed to the gym.

Started today with a nice 1 mile run on the treadmill.

Once that was finished it was time to start the Kettlebell "fun".

Today's kettlebell:
Swings - 1 minute
Snatch - Press - 30 Secs each side
Single Arm Swings - 1 minute
Snatch - Squat - Press - 30 Secs each side
Alternating Swings - 1 minute
All of the above 6 times, 40 minutes, Av HR 158bpm (85%), Max HR 174bpm (94%), 606 Calories burned.

Treadmill Run:
1 Mile, 10:59, Av HR 152bpm (82%), Max HR 179bpm (97%), 161 Calories Burned.

Street Run:
1.3 mile, 15:22, Av HR 164bpm (89%), Max HR 178bpm (96%), 254 Calories Burned.

Today's Choon of the day, poor quality vid though.

See ya.

Juneathon 2011 Day 5

Another day of rest.

No gym again today allowing my body to recover fully before heading back, should hopefully get a round of kettlebell cardio in tomorrow.

After yesterdays fun with the Garmin, it would appear it was my fault as I hadn't charged it properly, I decided to take both my iPhone and Garmin with me today to track the run, thankfully both worked I clocked in 1.39 miles in 14:58 putting in a 2011 pb for 1 mile at 10:50, so I'm quite pleased with that. Hopefully I can carry on and start shaving more time off these runs while extending the distances.

While taking part in this years Juneathon I am also attempting to drop some weight off my big fat fatty frame I started about 4 weeks ago with a starting weight of 106kg, i weighed in today and am currently at 100kg, hoping to get down to around 80-85 by September, I will continue to update the weight loss progress here too.

I am currently training towards my first ever triathlon in September this year, it's a nice short one (apparently) 400m swim (in a pool), 23k bike and a 5k run. I am looking for some triathlon kit to help me get through this and improve my training, nothing too expensive as it is still a possibility that I may not like it after doing this in September, if anyone has any recommendations please feel free to comment etc.

Ideally I'm looking at swim/bike shorts and SPD tri shoes for the bike so I don't have to fiddle around trying to get my shoes on at the transition.

Juneathon 2011 Day 4

A bit of a rest.

After the last couple of days I felt that I should avoid the gym today as pretty much every part of my body is aching ion some way.

I started the day being woken nice and early by both of my children, the first was sent back to his bedroom (05:00!) the second reassured and given back his cuddly toy so he could go back to sleep.

Around 07:00 I got out of bed and sorted both kids breakfasts and mine, home made oat/apple/cinnamon pancakes with strawberries, very nice.

I spent some quality time with my older son today as we visited the good ol £1.00 pictures, Tangled was today's film of choice, if you haven't seen it I would recommend it.

I managed to squeeze in my run, I can only assume it was a 1 miler as it was the same route I took earlier in the week, I had to guess as my (normally reliable) Garmin seemed to have a day off and not record any details of my run!

Oh and England's footballers showed us all how it should be done again! Oh dear Fabio!

Juneathon Day 3

Mini Triathlon.

Up early again today ready to hit the gym nice and early, feeling it after yesterdays exertions, had my normal brekkie cereal and a protein shake before heading out the door.

Thanks to yesterdays kettlebell workout I have a lovely set of blisters on both of my hands one of which rather helpfully burst during the day, this made it an easy decision on what I should be doing before today's Spinning class, so no weights or resistance training, just a standard 1 mile run on the treadmill before heading into the Spinning studio.

Today's profile was "enhancements" this is my fave by far, you do a specific amount of time (45, 60, 75 and 90 seconds) going as hard as you can at the highest resistance you can load onto your legs and then flat road at a fast pace for 1 minute between each set usually 3-4 per track, with 1 short track for recovery.

Spinning class finished I headed to the pool hoping to do 400 metres somewhere around 12 minutes, his was really only an excuse for me to try out my new goggles. Astonishingly I put in a time 08:09 for the 400m which I was pretty pleased with, I'm pretty sure that with a bit more work I could get that down even further, so all in all I was pretty happy with today's work.

Sadly no stats for the swim.

See you tomorrow.

Juneathon 2011 Day 2

Epic day of activities.

Up at the crack of dawn and in the gym for opening time (6am), started off with one of my aims for Juneathon and completed a nice gentle warm up 1 miler on the treadmill, 11:55 not really the quickest I've ever run a mile, but enough to get the heart rate up a bit.

So I moved onto the main part of the morning gym session, Kettlebell Cardio, it goes as follows:

12kg Kettlebell
Swings - 1 Minute
Snatch-Press - 30 seconds on each side
Single Arm Swings - 30 Seconds on each side
Snatch-Squat-Press - 30 Seconds on each side
Alternating Swings - 1 Minute
Rest - 1 Minute
Repeat 6 times.

Once you have completed this drink a tasty protein shake as your body will be desperate for it, have a nice stretch and remember to drink plenty of water through the day to aid muscle recovery.

Then repeat this 5 more times, give it a try you may like it, however hardcore I find this I bloody love it, if it was possible I'd do this workout every day.

That was my morning session complete

Stats:
Run - 1 mile 11:55 - Calories 178 - Av HR 149 bpm (81%) - Max HR 175 bpm (95%)

Kettlebell - 37:22 - Calories 578 - Av HR 157 bpm (85%) - Max HR 173 bpm (94%)

For some strange reason I didn't feel this was enough for today so I headed back to the gym for the 12:30 Spinning class, today's profile was endurance! Man if I'd known that before getting there I may have changed my mind, especially as I haven't been Spinning for over 1 week now, surprisingly the class wasn't too bad, some nice 1 leg isolation thrown into it to keep it interesting, you should try this, it makes you realise how much your stronger leg dominates the weaker leg. I even managed to keep my cadence up at 110 through out the class, all in all a very good class.

Stats:
50:31 - Calories 667 - Av HR 137 bpm (74%) - Max HR 171 bpm (92%)

Spinning again at 07:45 Friday, and then hopefully in the pool to start working on the 400 metre time.

Goodbye for now.

Juneathon 2011 Day 1

So here we go again, Jog Log and Blog for the next 30 days.

My aims during Juneathon are simple.

  1. Run at least 1 mile each day.
  2. Remember to blog each day.
  3. Get in at least 20 miles on the bike every week including 1 brick session.
  4. Get back in the pool and nail 400 metres in under 10 mins.
I have spent the last 2 days spending some quality time with my family starting in sunny Great Yarmouth and moving on to Wroxham today and an amazing place called Bewilderwood, oh dear what a great place. I spent the whole day walking and running around in some great woodland surroundings, if you haven't been I would highly recommend it Bewilderwood.

So for the last couple of days I have eaten bad food, for instance I did the Harry Ramsden challenge (really didn't expect a piece of cod that big!) ending on a long drive back to the lovely shire of Essex.

I convinced the Wife to come out and join me and for a change I told the truth and only made her run 1 mile, felt really good too, I'm pretty sure I could have gone a bit quicker to at a push, so maybe during this "festival of activity and excuses" I could get my average mile time down, I hope this could be the case as I have a triathlon to do in September and the run (5k) is a serious weakness and worry for me.

To all Juneathon participants, good luck and "bring it".

Not a great week.....

Training has pretty much gone to pieces this week, a combination of child care and work have taken over from gym and sweat.

I did help my Mum move home on Saturday though and had a trip to the local refuse dump today, both of which were very sweaty and hard jobs, does this count as proper exercise? I guess it will have to for this week.

Will have to get back on it in a big way this coming week, I have around 10-20 kg to drop before September to get ready for Armageddon and the Dunmow Triathlon.

Thanks for reading, hopefully the next one will be a lot more interesting.

Juneathon 2011

Good morning, I appear to be back up and running, Juneathon 2011 starts in a few days and I will be documanting the whole thing here. As well as Juneathon I will be keeping the world up to date with how much timber I manage to shift.

I should hopefully be running or cycling every day.

Saturday, 5 February 2011

This training stuff is hard to fit in.....

Been a while since I turned the puta on let alone sat down to write anything such is the hectic world of work life balancing.

So I am greeted with over 200 emails! And the realisation that my training has pretty much gone to pot, the only day I could have trained this week was Friday and instead of getting up bright and early I slept through my alarm and stayed in bed until 9, bear in mind I'm usually done at the gym by that time.

So my goals for this week, gym early doors on Monday hopefully do a little run - bike - run. Then the same again on Tuesday but probably just run and a small weights sesh, Wednesday I start work early and finish late, Thursday I'll probably take my shiny new toy out for a 10 mile spin to see I get on with it, Friday is the same as Wednesday so no training :(, Saturday I might get to the gym for a little bit or go for a long run along the river, we'll have to wait and see.

In my bid to drop some weight I started with the good old Weight Watchers plan this week, it's amazing how much you end up scrutinising what and how much of it you actually eat during a day, I get to use 49 Pro Points each day and so far I have come in under each day, wouldn't have happened if I wasn't doing this I'd probably eat double the food my Pro Points allow in biscuits alone :)

Slendertone program is also going well and although (as a fatty) I still cant see my abs I can certainly feel a difference in them, I also started the 100 Push-Up program this week, I started on Friday and did an initial pathetic 11 in a row for the initial test! The program then went through the motions, ending up doing a total of 45 with rests in between a set number of push-ups, I'll keep updating on here.

On 3rd March this year I will again be taking part in Vertical Rush at Tower 42 in aid of Shelter, I nee to raise a minimum of £150.00 for them, last year I completed the run UP the 920 steps to the top of the tower in 10:30 this year I hope to be on or under 8 minutes, please help me to raise lots of money for this great cause any donation large or small is great if you want to please click here

Last but not least, congratulations to every one who took part in Janathon this year and especially those who managed to keep up and jog, log and blog every single day, well done to all of you, remember though it's just the start, don't let the end of Janathon be the end of your running.

Janathon Day 26 - Nearly at the end

Hello again.

I'm back, how long for this time we'll have to wait and see, hit the gym early doors for the first time in a while. At the start of Janathon I was so intent on doing this all the way to the end, however much I love my job I hate the fact that it has stopped me from doing this every day! The only thing I have managed to keep up is the amount of walking I do every day while at work and using the Slendertone System-Abs, so far its working well although I cannot see my abs I can feel what the systm is doing they feel firmer and I get the same burn that I get from doing a full whack ab work out in the gym. Oh well I just have to stick with fitting it in as and when.

So back to today, stepped into the gym and was pleasantly surprised to see a friend there at the same time as me (it wasn't Farley) I didn't even know that Carl knew what 6am looked like, started off on the treadmill for my nice run/walk 5minute brisk walk, 3 minute run, 1.5 minute walk, 5 minute run, 2.5 minute walk got to the half way point and pressed the lap button on the Gramin 110 and bang it freezes! Second time this has happened, so yet again I'm on the treadmill trying to reset it! Second half 3 minute run, 1.5 minute walk, 5 minute run, 5 minute brisk walk warm down..
As I didn't have a space booked for Spinning (I was 4th on the waiting list) I jumped on the lovely gym bike and set up to do 10k got started at a decent pace getting the heart rate up to around 150 and tried to keep it there, with 1k left to go Milly comes out and says there's a space on the Spinning class so I leave the gym bike at 9k and 19 minutes.
Spinning - Enhancements, basically you start on flat road with jumps the aim of enhancements is to ramp up the resistance as high as you can and go as fast as you can, the first set were 45 seconds with 1 minute recovery, second and 3rd set were 1 minute with 1 minute recovery, on the 3rd set I even topped out the resistance, first time I've done that so I was very please. All in all a great work out.

Janathon Day 15 - This has gone wrong :(

Now don't get me wrong I never even in my wildest dreams thought I would win Janathon, I did however expect to go through every day of it.

Thanks to my employers (weirdly I do actually love my job) insisting on offering lots of overtime and extra hours training is now 3rd behind work and family, this week has been particularly bad overtime every day except Wednesday (rare day off for my Birthday), so my total training effort for this week has comprised of 2 trips to the gym, fair enough on those trips I feel I worked pretty damn hard.

I find myself wondering if I could be bothered to wear my Garmin or use RunKeeper on my phone to track just how much walking I do each day, I must have walked around the O2 and surrounding area a good couple of thousand times this week, does this count?

Does doing a bit of The Michael Jackson Experience on the Wii count?

On a positive note I was sent a lovely bit of kit to test this week and write about on this blog Slendertone System-Abs started using it today did 40 mins started on level 50 then half way through turned it up to level 60, was a bit of an odd sensation and even through the fatness of my belly I could see the muscles contracting, I could certainly feel them, will update again on how I'm getting on in a couple of weeks. BTW, does this count for Janathon?

On to today's gym sesh, I decided due to my lack of attendance this week I would do a mini duathlon Run/Bike/Run, started off on the treadmill for run 1 a nice brisk 5 min warm-up walk and then onto the run/walk part, 1.5min run, 1.5 min walk then 3min run, 3min walk followed by 5min cool down brisk walk, total time 25:16 3.18k.
I headed downstairs to the bikes (I actually didn't know there were no bikes upstairs, I do now) I really don't like using gym bikes, they don't feel like real bikes, so much prefer the Spinning bikes, got the bike set up and set out for 10k was hoping to do it in under 20mins went just over with a time of 20:28, second half was quickest though, I hear that's meant to be a good thing?
Run 2 I took a different approach and set a 2k target for this one, no warm-up required as I was nice and warm from the previous 2 activities so straight into the run, kept a steady run 1.5min walk 1,5min. Total time 15:02, all in all I was quite pleased with my efforts.

I already know I wont be running tomorrow other than chasing my 2 kids around the house, I may take a walk somewhere though, I'll keep you posted.

Details for today's activities:
Run 1

  • Av HR = 139 (75%)
  • Max HR = 179 (97%)
  • Cal = 327

Bike

  • Av HR = 148 (80%)
  • Max HR = 161(87%)

Janathon day 12 - I'm back

Hello again.

Here I am at last, thankfully I have a rare day off work today, so interestingly I was up and about at 5am, and out the door at 05:50 heading to the gym.

I've been looking forward to this day as I've not done any extra exercise since Sunday.

Thanks to the actions of 1 person I have been had to cut down gym and running in favor of going to work for longer each day, great, but hey I'm getting over time for my troubles so I suppose its not all bad.

I haven't blogged for a few day either despite my best efforts writing this stuff on my iPhone gets very irritating, I am now considering buying a netbook just so I can get these blogs up each day.

Monday was a big day as my idol Mr. Richard Callender was back on my TV with "The Biggest Loser" I used to see that show and think wow the title has a double meaning, now I'm a recovering seriously over weight dude I can see it does amazing things for the people on the show. If anyone is seriously into fitness and wants to challenge themselves I can fully recommend Richard Callenders Armageddon fitness events click this link for details I'll be attending the Harrow event 20th Feb.

So I hit the gym nice and early, on the treadmill at 06:07 25 mins later I had stumbled my way to 1.94 miles, I still had time to kill so headed over to the weights area (I've not been here for about 4 weeks now) and started my short shoulder workout:

External Cable Rotation 2x12 @ 6.25kg
Seated B/Bell Press 3x12 @ 14kg (per d/bell)
Lateral Raise 3x8 @ 10kg (per d/bell)

Then at 06:55 I popped into the Spinning studio, oh how I have missed Spinning, today we cycled up a pretty steep hill at times very fast, and then we eventually cycled on the lovely flat road at the top of the hill.

Janathon Day 7 - Long day - Short walk

I'll start with details of my planned run on Thursday 6th January.

Had a bit of a lay-in as I didn't have to start work until 2 pm so I thought "I'll go in a bit earlier and have a run along the river" what I didn't plan for was just how much rain there would be, yes when I left Essex it was raining, not too bad, luckily I did pack my Adidas Windstopper running jacket, but even so I wasn't expecting that amount of rain!

I arrived at work and got changed into my running gear, happily I remembered my fleece hat, sadly I forgot my gloves, so off I set for my 5 minute warm-up walk, by the time this was done my hands were frozen and I didn't want to run anywhere except back to work to get warm and dry. Alas I carried on, it turned out to be a quite enjoyable run and if time had permitted I may have carried on a lot longer. All along the river Thames starting just before the wonderful Woolwich Ferry and finishing up just inside West Thamesmead.

Details
2.31 miles
30.39 minutes
Av HR - 141
Max HR - 180

Janathon Day 7 was slightly messed up by a stupidly busy and longer than planned day at work meaning all I could do was an un-planned walk, I mirrored the Woolwich, Plumstead, Belmarsh and Thamesmead walk from earlier in the week.

Janathon Day 5 - So very very tired

Here we go again, the real world catching up with my big fat arse.

Lack of actual sleep and the start of a hell of a lot of over time mixed in with trying to fit in some kind of exercise each day in January, someone said to me yesterday that he didn't know how I did this and found the time for everything that goes on in my life, to be fair sometimes I cant work it out either.

For instance I went to bed at a reasonable time last night around 22:00, was woken by my baby at around 00:00 and again at around 01:30, each time required settling both him and me back down to sleep, I was then up at 04:30 and ready to leave the house for work at 06:15, I arrived at work at 07:15 for an 08:00 start, went out on patrol until 13:00 when I stopped for lunch (really exciting baked potato with beans followed by 3 apples) at 14:00 (ish) I went back out on patrol until 16:40 when I had a meeting and then back out again at 17:20, my shift ended at 20:00 and I arrived home at around 20:45, to which I got changed and headed straight to the gym, I am now home after picking my wife up form work, the time is 22:22!

Worryingly more days are like this than not, only most of the time I hit the gym at 06:00 rather than 21:00.

Have a great day tomorrow whatever you're doing and keep going with the Janathon fun.

Janathon day 4 - Woolwich, Plumstead, Belmarsh and Thamesmead

Back to work today so gym etc takes a backseat again, luckily my job allows meca lot of freedom to pretty much go where I choose too, today I decided my presence was required walking the streets and alleyways of my "ground".

Off I went through Woolwich town centre and onto Plumstead road heading towards Plumstead, stopped off at the bus garage to catch up with some of the bus drivers I work alongside then headed to the Plumstead underpass where I saw and spoke to one of my regular homeless guys. From there I went up onto the ridgeway which runs alongside Nathan Way and behind the delightful sights of HMP Belmarsh.

I ended my walk at Thamesmead town center and clocked up 3.45 miles in just over 1 hour.

No "choon of the day" today though, not allowed to listen while at work.

I hope you don't mind but I'm going to ask for some help. In March I am taking part in 2 events, the first is Vertical Rush in aid of Shelter and then The Silverstone Half Marathon in aid of Children With Leukemia So I'll be adding know and asking for sponsors each day, if you would like to please click on the link. Many thanks.

Janathon day 3 - Back to the treadmill I go

After yesterdays nice river run I retired back inside to the warmth of the gym today and the exciting world of the treadmill!

At least they had some football for me to watch today.

For some reason my left shin is feeling pretty damn sore today, any advice about this would be gratefully received, the pain is towards the top of the shim and feels muscular, hurts to touch.

Anyways I decided to ignore the pain and head off, remembered my water and a bottle of Lucozade today.

Copied yesterdays run walk so brisk 5 min walk to warm up followed by 1.5 min run and 2 min walk x6 on a 1.0% incline, each run was on 11.00 kmph.

Back to work after the long weekend tomorrow, planning on doing a lot of walking so will wear the Garmin to detail how far and where I go, should be different, will also try to run at least 1 mile after work.

Janathon day 2 - A lovely morning by the river

Day 2 is here.

Up at a reasonable time today and decided to head outside to my favored trail (used it a lot for VLM training in 2010) instead of to the gym. Parked the car up and got out, HR monitor, GPS watch, iPhone, running playlist and Getrunning App all ready, water? Water? Ah crap that'll be in the bottle sitting in my hallway then!

As this was my first outside run of the winter I thought I may take it easy and ease up a bit on trying to run rather than jog, yeah that lasted about 30 secs so I set off for my 5 min warm up briskly walking along the river bank, ooh look there's loads of ice plates floating on top of the river, into the first 1.5 min run and I'm moving quicker than I anticipated, second run and I'm blowing a bit, it went on like that for the 6 runs and recovery periods.

All in all a nice run along the river, will defo do the same next Sunday and hopefully go further than 2.19 miles.

Todays run/wlk

Warm up 5min brisk walk
6 X 1.5 min running with 2 min recovery walks in between.

Details below.

Hello 2011

Firstly Happy New Year.

For most of this week I think I've had no more than 4 hours restful sleep each night thanks to the lovely disease that is Chicken Pox (not me, my 1 year old son) so going to work and hitting the gym has really taken it out of me.

Today is the start of the first ever Janathon, around 160 people competing to win it by running (exercising) every day and writing their blogs every day, my creative writing skills are very limited so mine will probably get a little dull at times (if they're not already).

So I hit the gym today nice and early and jumped on my trusty treadmill, I'm trying to get a little faster this year, so instead of the usual plod along at 7.5 kmph I went straight in with 10.0 kmph, quite surprisingly I kept up that pace and even managed to finish the last 1 minute run on 11.5, today was day 3 of my generic iphone training plan, so it starts off with a brisk 5 minutes of walking then run for 1 minute walk for 1.5 minutes, you do this 8 times and then walk briskly for a bit at the end as your warm down. I'd love to share heart rates etc but my Garmin is currently frozen and I'm trying frantically to work out how to sort it without resetting!

Run done I strolled into the Spinning studio sat on my fave bike (number 13) nicely to the 2 ladies either side of me had already had a chat and made a pact that they would be picking on me today! Yeah thanks, it's not enough that the instructor is a long time friend who annihilates me every class anyway, now I have 2 complete strangers joining in! Anyway, today's class was speed and hills, surely they're 2 terms that don't go together, suffice to say after track 2 I was flagging, the sleep deprivation clearly catching up on me, feeling very sick is not fun, but I am determined and will not stop, I get through the class and am still alive now, incidentally I think that is probably the hardest I have ever worked in a Spinning class.

Have a great day everyone.

JP
